Starting a FLL Team

The BadgerBOTS Robotics program provides the leadership and guidance required to make starting up a F.I.R.S.T. LEGO League (FLL) team a relatively easy process.

If you have any questions regarding our LEGO League program, don't hesitate to contact us for additional information or to schedule a discussion with your group.

To start a new team you should proceed through the following steps.

  1. Contact Chris, Teri, or Ben to setup a time for a presentation to your group to talk about what FLL is and what it is not.  This discussion is essential in providing you with information regarding the costs, timelines, and leadership roles that must be carried out to have a successful FLL experience for the participants.  Our existing teams would love to come to your school event and show off our robot!

  2. Obtain the funding for the program.  How teams finance themselves can vary.  Our current programs are sponsored by the schools Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) or by a per student fee for the financial needs of the team.  Teams have team members purchase their own t-shirt in addition to this sponsorship.   Our current estimate for running a team with the BadgerBOTS program is $250 base fee plus $45 per student.  A team is 10 students maximum.  Thus the cost is no more than $100 per team member.  This is a fantastic bargain once you see the program.  We ask you to please consider a personal or company contribution to support the overall program and scholarships for participation.

  3. Commit to starting a team by making a payment to "BadgerBOTS" in the amount of $250.  Mail or deliver the check to our "contact us" location indicating what school team it is for in the notation section of the check.  The balance can be paid in the fall when student fees are collected.

  4. BadgerBOTS provides two weekly meetings with all the equipment and mentors you need to run a FLL team, however it is quite beneficial to have at least 2 or more team leaders/coaches/mentors to guide and focus the team.  It is very helpful if at least one of these people is a teacher at the school so that they can have access to the students via a bulletin board in the hallway, or a PA announcement for team activities and can host 1 or 2 meetings per week over lunch, recess or after school hours.  A parent can fill this role also, the logistics are just a little more work if they don't know the school very well or if they are hosting work sessions off campus.

  5. Leaders/coaches/mentors should attend our "Training for Mentors" course in May if at all possible.

  6. Recruit students... grades 4-8 (3 if they are really into it!).  Remember that we can often bring a team out to your school event.

  7. Plan to attend the kickoff event very early in September.

  8. Meet regularly starting immediately after the kickoff.

  9. There is also a Junior FLL for younger children in the school... call for details of this program if you are interested.
