LEGO Robotics Class

$150 for 5 weeks – In-Person Instruction

LEGO Robotics for beginners as well as students with some previous experience. We will learn to build and program LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robots using the LEGO Mindstorms programming software. The class will also go into how to program sensors to help make our robots more accurate and respond to their surroundings. Fun, silly, and LEGO-based challenges engage students and become more challenging as we learn and explore more about the LEGO robot and programming language. Students will learn to make observations, improve their designs, and practice the engineering design process.

Age Range: Ages 8-12

Prerequisites: None

Learning Objectives:

  • Become familiar with LEGO technic parts and building LEGO mechanisms
  • Use the engineering design process to brainstorm solutions to class challenges, build and code their robot, test and observe, then continue to improve or fix their model
  • Learn about LEGO robot sensors and how to use them in a program
  • Practice troubleshooting with code and hardware

Class Overview – We plan our classes with student needs in mind and adjust to progress made each day. A typical schedule looks like:

Day 1 – Become familiar with the LEGO robot “brain” and programming app. Investigate the library of LEGO parts and build our rover-style robots.

Day 2 – Use the LEGO rover robots to investigate motors and wheels. How does this robot move, and how can we create program instructions to move the robot accurately along a path?

Day 3 – First robot challenge! Learn the rules of the robot challenge and the differences between  “autonomous” and “remote controlled” robots.

Day 4 – Build attachments to the rover robot to help it complete tasks like pushing, lifting, and dropping objects. Add a motor to make the attachments move!

Day 5 – Final robot challenge! Students will combine everything they have learned so far to attempt a more complex robot challenge.
