How do we get our robot from one home area to the other?

For each match - team members divide into two groups and position one group on each side of the field left /right or red/blue. These members cannot switch sides during the match. Red side team members may switch in and out with red side team members at any time. Blue side team members may switch in and out with blue side team members at any time. Team members may not pass anything between red and blue sides, INCLUDING the robot.

So, how do we get a robot that is in red, over to blue? Good question….

Here are your options:

  1. Create a transit program in which the sole purpose of the program is to get your robot from one side to the other.

  2. Launch your robot out into the field… wait until it is completely out of the home/launch areas. Interrupt the robot… you will lose a precision token for the interruption, but you can rescue the robot to either side.

  3. If a team member sees that the robot is off course during a run and they know they need to launch their next run from the other side, they can practice rescuing as soon as they notice the issue, and rescue to either side. You will lose a precision token for the rescue, but you will also potentially save yourself another token by knowing where the robot needs to be for the next launch.

M02Shark

“Can we touch the shark?” As teams already know, or will find out rather quickly, the shark model from the M02 mission very often lands on the home line when activated. The question we get fairly often is, “Can we take the shark by hand into home, and then have the robot move it to the habitat?”

Here is what happens with this model.

1–The shark makes it all the way into home on its own….no problem there, points for no longer touching the cave and the robot can then move the shark model out to the habitat if they choose.

2–The shark doesn’t make it into home. Pretty simple as well, if the shark is no longer touching the cave, points for that, and it stays as is unless the robot moves it (the robot may still attempt to retrieve the shark at a later point to attempt the habitat portion).

3–The shark comes to rest partially in home. We have a couple scenarios here: (a) The team can leave the shark where it is… receive points for no longer touching the cave, and that is that. (b) They can also, at any point, try to have the robot “scoop” the shark into home. If that happens - points for no longer touching the cave and the robot can then move the shark model out to the habitat if they choose. (c) They also have an option to remove the partially in home shark model by hand, if they do this, a couple of things happen, they still get points for the shark no longer touching the cave, however, according to Rule 18, since the shark model is a mission model, it must be given to the referee for the remainder of the match. This means they do not get the option to send the shark back out to the habitat for the additional points.

M01–Coral Nursery

Your team can choose the starting orientation of the coral tree in the holder. Most of the time, when a referee resets a mission model in a valid starting configuration, we will not specifically adjust small details to make scoring easier for the teams. For example, we will not adjust a loop to the left, or right, or spin a model in a way that teams request, based on how they have been practicing, or how their programing needs it to be positioned. There is an exception this season to one of the components of M01, The official FIRST setup video does in fact state that the team may choose the starting orientation of the coral tree in the holder. Based on update 05, that video is a valid source of authority. UPDATE 05 – SOURCES OF AUTHORITY – The official FIRST updates & clarifications, field setup video, mission video, robot game rulebook pictures/text will be the only sources of authority. Referees will combine these materials to arrive at the best possible call.
