Happy Pi Day from BadgerBots!

March 14 (3/14) is Pi Day, and it is one of our favorite days of the year. Why? Because at BadgerBots, we do not just eat pie. We use pi. All the time.

So What Is Pi, Anyway?

Pi (written as π) is a special number that starts with 3.14159... and goes on forever without repeating. You get pi by measuring around the outside of any circle and dividing by how wide it is. No matter how big or small the circle, you always get the same answer: pi. That is what makes it a mathematical constant.

Pi Is All Over BadgerBots

At BadgerBots, pi is not just something we learn about. It is something we use. Every time a robot wheel spins, pi is behind the scenes. The wheels on our LEGO robots are circles, which means pi is what lets us calculate exactly how far a robot travels with each rotation.

Want your robot to drive exactly three feet? Pi tells you how many times the wheel needs to spin to get there. Want to program a perfect 90-degree turn? Pi is in that calculation too.

Starting Out: LEGO Robotics Camps

Our LEGO robotics camps are where many young engineers first get their hands on a robot. Campers build, program and drive their own LEGO robots around the classroom floor or on a robot game table. They may not realize it at first, but pi is already at work every time their robot moves.

Camps are designed to be fun and accessible, whether your kid is a total beginner or already obsessed with robots. It is the perfect starting point for a bigger journey.

Level Up: LEGO League Bootcamps and Python Coding

age up, they can take our more advanced LEGO robotics camps: LEGO League Team Bootcamp (grades 3-8), LEGO League MISSION ACCOMPLISHED (grades 3-8) and Python LEGO Robotics Challenge (grades 5-8), where the building and coding get taken up a notch. Missions are more complex, precision matters more and pi becomes a real tool rather than just a concept. From there, kids are more than ready to join a FIRST LEGO League team and compete at youth robotics tournaments statewide!

Celebrate With Us

In honor of Pi Day, we are sharing an activity sheet you can do at home with your child. And with a Winter Storm Watch through Monday evening, you might just have the perfect snow day to try it out! Download it below and have STEAM fun together.

Happy Pi Day from all of us at BadgerBots. Whether you are celebrating with pie or with π, we hope your day is full of discovery.
